Manicure & Pedicure Danger #1: Dirty Tools

  • Does your Nail Salon sterilize their tools between customers?  Or are your nails cut and trimmed with the same tools they used on the previous customer? Studio 9 Salon is one of a handful of salons in Michigan that uses a hospital class FDA approved  tool sterilizer.  E-coli, and other germs have been found on tools in nail salons. Germs can get on the tool and cause a very bad bacterial infection in your nails. The only way to prevent this is with the use of sterilized tools. Studio 9 Salon tools are sterilized in a single use bag that is opened in front of the client.

  • Only two states in the US, Texas and Iowa specifically address the issue of sterilization of tools for manicure and pedicure procedures. Both states have mandated FDA approved appliances that sterilize all tools. For the safety of our clients Studio 9 Salon follows the most stringent laws in the nation. All of Studio 9 Salons Nail Technicians are Licenced with the State of Michigan.

Manicure & Pedicure Danger #2: Dirty Tubs

  • Studio 9 Salon pedicure tubs are disinfected prior to use. We clean our pedicure soaking tubs with a chemical disinfecting agent. Our tubs are manufactured out of glass. Our glass pedicure tubs are not just a pretty face. This material allows for superior cleaning and disinfection abilities in the nonporous surfaces.

Following is a list of organisms that our disinfectant kills

Bacteria

  • Staphylococcus aureus (Staph.)
  • Salmonella choleraesuis
  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa
  • Streptococcus pyogenes (Strep.)
  • Escherichia coli O157:H7 (E. coli)
  • Shigella dysenteriae
  • Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)

Fungi

  • Trichophyton mentagrophytes (can cause Athlete's Foot)
  • Candida albicans (a yeast)

Viruses

  • Rhinovirus Type 37 (a type of virus that can cause colds)
  • Influenza A (Flu virus)
  • Hepatitis A virus
  • Rotavirus
  • Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
  • HIV-1 (Human Immunodeficiency Virus)*
  • Herpes simplex Type 2
  • Rubella virus
  • Adenovirus Type 2
  • Cytomegalovirus Staphylococcus aureus (Staph.)
  • Escherichia coli 0157:H7 (E. coli)
  • Feline parvovirus
  • Canine parvovirus
  • Mycobacterium bovis (Tuberculosis)
  • Staphylococcus aureus (Staph.)

  • Studio 9 Salon pedicure tubs have pipe less water jets. So that dirty water does not get trapped in the tub unit.  Some tubs in use have a design flaw that traps dirty water making them difficult to properly clean.

  • You can get fungus or yeast bacteria from dirty tubs, which causes fungal infections from pedicure tubs. Fungus infections eat away at the edge of the nail and often get into the base of a nail.

  • We recommend our clients to never shave their legs the morning before a pedicure. Because they can get micro-nicks in the skin from shaving and fungus can get into skin.

Manicure & Pedicure Danger #3: Dangerous Procedures

  • Foot razors are illegal in most states, including Michigan. Foot razors are prohibited from use at Studio 9 Salon.

Types of sterilization

  • UV light – looks like a large toaster oven. Has a UV light bulb that is said to sterilize. Not FDA approved and not used at Studio 9 Salon.

  • Dry autoclave – Studio 9 Salon uses heat to sterilize to a FDA / hospital grade standard. Takes longer compared to a wet autoclave but is the easiest to maintain and use. Our tools are sterilized with heat at 325 degrees F for 60 minutes.

Our prices reflect a complete service. Some nail salons advertise a low price and charge extra for incidentals.
